The publication presents a comparative practices in providing legal assistance in criminal cases. It aims to examine the different aspects of the right to adequate defense with particular focus on adequate access of indigent persons to defence in criminal cases. Its primary goal is to foster discussion on these topics in the wake of the adoption of the new Law on Criminal Procedure.

The guidebook provides an overview of the domestic and comparative legal frameworks regarding the use of these measures. It can serve as a basis for the daily work of judges and prosecutors involved in organized crime cases.

A report based on a seminar held at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek on 12 October 2010, organized by the OSCE Secretariat and supported by Kazakhstan's OSCE Chairmanship.
