Santiago Arias, the Technical Director, Operations and Maintenance, of Torresol Energy, describes technological solutions in the Gemasolar Concentrated Solar Power plant’s operation. Gemasolar’s projected annual production of 110 GWh is equivalent to the power generated in burning 89,000 metric tons of lignite coal, or 217,000 barrels of oil. The power plant uses a huge array of mirrors to heat a molten salt storage system in the central tower, which is then used to run steam turbines, resulting in the ability to continue energy production after the sun goes down.

The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine (PCU) supported a study trip to Spain on renewable energy promotion for representatives of the Institute of Renewable Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the East Europe Foundation, the Sevastopol city administration, and Fund Sevastopol, a regional development agency, on 26 to 30 September 2011.
